The majority of the films in the Planet of the Apes franchise have centered around the question of how this planet came to be dominated by apes. The original 1968 movie and the 2001 Tim Burton remake follow the story of astronauts who discover that the planet they crashed on is actually Earth, and the first sequel concludes with the destruction of the planet. However, the rest of the films, totaling ten in number, focus on the decline of humanity and the rise of the apes. The recent reboot trilogy, consisting of Rise, Dawn, and War of the Planet of the Apes, brilliantly portrays the apocalyptic rise of the primates. By the end of this trilogy, the apes have triumphed, and it becomes evident to all that the war has been won. The planet now belongs to them. So, what comes next?
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the first film in seven years and potentially the beginning of a new trilogy, has the opportunity to delve into this world rather than merely establishing it. Freed from the constraints of a predetermined apocalypse narrative, the movie can tell a more intimate story that gradually builds up to an epic climax.
Caesar, the revolutionary ape who led the chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans, bonobos, and gibbons to dominance in the reboot trilogy, has long passed away by the time Kingdom's events unfold. Although Andy Serkis, who famously brought Caesar to life through groundbreaking motion-capture technology, does not reprise his role in Kingdom, he is credited as a consultant. The story takes place generations later, allowing enough time for the apes to establish their own clans and independent mini-societies. Noa (portrayed by Owen Teague) is a member of the Eagle Clan, a chimp society that practices falconry with golden eagles and leads a peaceful existence. The Eagle Clan is unaware of how the apes came to rule the planet, and they have no need to know. Their knowledge of humans, who are now reduced to mute nuisances, is inaccurate and, as far as they are concerned, irrelevant.
